When it comes to serial killers and the shocking details of their crimes, very few can compare to the sick and twisted mind of Ted Bundy. Bundy have pure, insurmountable evil inside of him and he hid it with such ease. He was completely normal, even successful on the outside – which made him all the more dangerous. Who would suspect a clean-cut law student with many girlfriends of serial rape and murder? He was a member of the Washington State Republican organization. He even worked for a suicide prevention hotline!
Bundy was a master manipulator and had everyone fooled. After his arrest he managed to escape custody twice. He also kept himself alive on death row by giving information in calculated bits. Bundy’s been described as charming, handsome, and even sensitive. These things couldn’t be further from the truth. He was a monster wearing a carefully crafted disguise.
For Bundy, it was all about control. He claimed it wasn’t lust or hatred or revenge that drove him. He claimed to be so attracted to his victims that he wanted to possess them. Rape wasn’t enough, to truly possess them he had to kill them, and in some cases consume parts of them so they would become a part of him.
Bundy Wore Disguises and Impersonated Authority Figures
Ted Bundy is often referred to as a “man with many faces”. He was known for wearing various disguises in order to get close to potential victims. He would pretend to be a police officer or firefighter to get teens and young women to feel safe enough to leave with him. Once he lured them out of public areas, he’d handcuff them, and take them to his kill site.
He Pretended to be Weak and Injured to Gain Women’s Sympathy
Even without a disguise handy, Ted Bundy knew how to lay on the charm and disarm people. He had a stash of plaster for casts, arm slings, and crutches in his home. He’d play on women’s compassion by pretending to be injured and struggling with books or boxes. The unsuspecting girl would smile at his clumsy charm and offer to help him pack everything up in his car. Once positioned just right he’d strike her over the head with a crowbar, toss her in the car and handcuff her. That would be it, she’d never be seen alive again.
Bundy Bludgeoned and Sexual Assaulted Women With Foreign Objects
He didn’t always wait for an opportunity to snatch women up off the streets. Ted Bundy actually broke into homes to commit rape and murder.
January 4, 1974, Bundy broke into the basement bedroom of an 18-year-old dancer and UW student Karen Sparks. He bludgeoned her with a rod from her own bed frame and raped her. He used the metal rod to viciously sexually assault her and left her lying there in a pool of blood. She survived but had major internal injuries and was already in a coma when her roommates found her. She suffered permanent brain damage.
Bundy Brutally Slaughtered an Entire House Full of Women
You’d think he’d want to lay low after breaking out of prison and fleeing to Florida – but he couldn’t go a week without going berserk. In January of 1978, Ted Bundy broke into the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University and committed brutal mass rape and murder within 20 minutes.
He beat 21-year-old Margaret Bowman to death with a chunk of firewood, then garroted her with a stocking. Next, he beat and strangled 20-year-old Lisa Levy. He sexually assaulted her with a bottle, ripped one of her nipples, and bit into one of her buttcheeks.
He then bludgeoned two other sorority sisters named Karen Chandler and Kathy Kleiner on his way out of the house. They were both so badly beaten they suffered broken jaws, missing teeth, and lacerations. He got a few whole blocks away before breaking into another student’s house where he severely beat Cheryl Thomas with a club before calling it a night.
Ted Bundy Kept Souvenirs, Including Body Parts
After his arrest, it came to light that Ted Bundy kept Polaroids of his victims hidden in a utility closet by his apartment. But sometimes the photos weren’t enough, he also kept severed heads and random body parts. When asked why he kept such morbid tokens he replied, “When you work hard to do something right, you don’t want to forget it.”
Bundy Didn’t Just Attack Women – He Raped and Murdered Children Too
On February 9, 1978, in Lake City, Florida, Ted Bundy kidnapped, raped and murdered a 12-year-old girl named Kimberly Leach. The monster then dumped her body under a pig shed and skipped town.
Bundy confessed to luring 12-year-old Lynette Dawn Culver away from her Junior High School in Pocatello, Idaho. He abducted her, took her back to his hotel room where he raped her, drowned her, and threw her body in a river north of Pocatello.
Ted Bundy Did Dry Runs to Train for his Killing Sprees
Bundy treated murder like a sport, he would actually engage in a catch and release type of training during his “off-season.” He would pick women up simply to keep his skills sharp and then just let them go. He later told interviewers that he had a Ph.D. in serial killing. He felt killing was no different than cooking, repair work, or any other trade and he practiced regularly to “hone” his macabre craft.
Ted Bundy was a Necrophile
It wasn’t until an interview in the 1980s that Ted Bundy admitted the full extent of his sexual deviance. He told Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth that after raping and killing women, he liked having sex with the corpses. Bundy said he would take the bodies somewhere he could spend the night with them. He’d often revisit them for additional sexual assaults until they were too decomposed or the animals got to them. Bundy kept the heads of 12 of his victims; he decapitated them with a hacksaw, washed their hair, applied makeup to them, and engaged in sexual acts with them.
Bundy Would Often Bite His Victims
Many of Bundy’s victims had bite marks on their bodies. One victim was bitten so badly on her breasts that the nipple was almost bitten off. Dental impressions would later help prove Bundy’s guilt and secure a conviction.
Bundy Tried to Manipulate His Victim’s Families Into Saving Him From the Electric Chair
As if he hadn’t already caused enough pain Bundy actually tried to convince his victim’s families to save him. He asked them to plead for mercy on his behalf in letters and fax them to Florida Governor Martinez. In exchange for helping him dodge the death penalty, he’d finally tell them were remains of their loved ones were. Obviously, his little ploy failed and old sparky pumped 2,000 volts through him on January 24, 1989.
