While not supernatural or horrific in any way, the sight of this crab dragging a doll’s head down the beach is a bit unsettling and worth adding to the archives. It seems this hermit crab decided to repurpose the discarded toy as its new home.
The video was captured on Wake Island in the Western Pacific’s Micronesia region, by beach clean-up volunteer named Joseph Cronk. The original post claimed the creature was “stuck” in a doll’s head and referred to the footage as a “heartbreaking moment”.
The intent was to draw attention to the magnitude of the plastic waste issue and stir up volunteers for a beach clean-up, but many viewers are being dismissive and even hostile.
Most of the commenters haven’t hesitated to point out that repurposing things is exactly what hermit crabs do. Once they outgrow their home (which is usually a shell) they abandon it and move into another. This hermit crab, in particular, chose a washed up doll head as his roomy new digs. He isn’t stuck – when he’s done with it, he’ll leave. He’d fit right in on Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls) over in Mexico!
While this little guy is fine, beach clean-ups really are important folks! Plastic waste is harmful to wildlife and in the grand scheme of things, it’s harmful to us as well! Don’t let one person’s deliberate misrepresentation sway you from helping out with the cause!
