It sounds like something straight out of a horror movie: A babysitter alone with a child hears them whisper about a monster under the bed. To calm their fears, she kneels down, lifts the covers, and—just like a scene from When a Stranger Calls or The Boogeyman—locks eyes with something far worse than she imagined.
But this wasn’t a campfire tale. It happened in real life.

Deputies rushed to a home, just outside Great Bend, at 10:30 p.m. on Monday. What they walked into was the aftermath not unlike a chilling urban legend brought to life.
On a seemingly ordinary night in Great Bend, Kansas, a babysitter tried to soothe a frightened child who insisted there was a “monster” hiding under the bed. Determined to ease the child’s fears, the babysitter checked beneath the bed—only to come face-to-face with a man hiding in the shadows, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office revealed Wednesday. Panic erupted as the intruder was exposed, sparking a struggle that sent both the babysitter and child tumbling. The man fled into the night, but not before he could be recognized by one of the victims.

Disturbingly, authorities revealed that Villalobos had once lived on the property and was under a current court order forbidding him from returning. Yet on that eerie night, he crept back in like the boogeyman—turning a child’s nightmare into reality.
The Barton County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Wednesday, confirming Martin Villalobos Jr., 27, was arrested and booked into the Barton County Jail after a brief chase. He is facing multiple charges including aggravated kidnapping and child endangerment. He remains in custody on a $500,000 bond.
This eerie real-life encounter proves that sometimes, the monsters under the bed aren’t imaginary. They’re real—and they’re closer than we think.
