Is Beetlejuice 2 confirmed? It’s the question we’ve been asking for 3 decades and the answer is finally yes! It’s happening! As in, it’s happening right now and there are pictures to prove it.
Production’s currently underway for the highly anticipated Beetlejuice 2! Tim Burton is back in the Director’s chair and he has Danny Elfman composing the film’s score, (obviously). Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, (showrunners of Netflix’s Wednesday) wrote the script. Warner Bros. has officially set the release date for September 6, 2024.
They’re Baack!
Yes, you can all exhale, Michael Keaton will be reprising his iconic role as the ‘ghost with the most,‘ Beetlejuice. Also returning is the beloved Winona Ryder (Stranger Things) as everyones favorite ‘strange and unusual,’ angst-filled teen – Lydia Deetz. Also returning is the great Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) – which is a huge relief because things wouldn’t be the same without her.
There are no reports of Alec Baldwin returning. In October of 2022 Geena Davis told PEOPLE, she “would of course like to revisit” the world of Beetlejuice. However, she didn’t think they would ask her and her onscreen hubby to return, pointing out: “I have a feeling that ghosts don’t age.” Davis asked, “How would they explain that they’re older?” Well, that’s actually the easy part.
The Maitlands seem like the type of couple who would insist on experiencing “growing old together” even in the afterlife. There. Problem solved. See, that’s a whole lot easier than explaining how they became two completely different people, isn’t it? Now get your asses on set.
Where Is Beetlejuice 2 Filming?
Shooting for Beetlejuice 2 began May 10th, in London. Set photos from the Daily Mail UK have provided a glimpse into the film. Lydia Deetz, played by Ryder, was the central protagonist in the 1988 classic, known for her distinctive goth-black hair with pointed bangs. In this early behind the scenes peek, her signature hairstyle is back in full force. Still dressed in black, complete with white stitching on the collar.
Is Jenna Ortega going to be in Beetlejuice 2?
The rumors are true. Jenna Ortega, (Wednesday & Scream VI) will portray the daughter of Lydia Deetz. Additionally, Monica Bellucci (Irreversible), has been cast as Beetlejuice’s wife. Willem Dafoe and Justin Theroux have also recently joined the cast.
What is the plot of Beetlejuice 2?
Specific plot details for Beetlejuice 2 have yet to be revealed. There have been multiple storylines and attempts at a sequel over the years, though nothing ever took off. There was talk of taking Beetlejuice to Hawaii back in the 1990s (yes, Hawaii). The plot involved the family’s island vacation taking a dark turn with an evil entity. They end up summoning Beetlejuice to help them vanquish it.
Beetlejuice 1988
The original Beetlejuice (1988), also directed by Tim Burton, is now a cult classic. The film starred Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as Adam and Barbara Maitland, a couple of spooksters haunting their former home. A new family moves in Delia and Charles Deetz, with a young girl named Lydia. The ghosts want to frighten the new homeowners to reclaim their once peaceful and humble abode. The mischievous entity “Beetlejuice” gets summoned into the mortal world (after his name is spoken thrice). Mayhem ensues.
Beetlejuice the Animated Series
The character’s popularity led to the development of Beetlejuice the Animated Series which ran throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The Animated Series was four seasons of “besties” Beetlejuice and Lydia getting in and out of shenanigans together. Their adventures featured various supernatural themes and characters. Episodes are set in the “Neitherworld” and within the mortal world’s New England.
Just like the film, saying the name “Beetlejuice” three times summons him. In the animated series, Lydia also travels to the Neitherworld by reciting an incantation:
“Though I know I should be wary,
