The rumors are true, there will be a Dexter prequel series on Showtime and it’s officially titled “Dexter: Origins.”
That’s right, Showtime has given the green light for a series to take us all the way back to the beginning. Dexter was and still remains a one of a kind. “Dexter: Origins” will follow a young Dexter Morgan as he transitions into the vigilante serial killer we all know and love.
Like the original series, Dexter (2006), the new spinoff will be set in the character’s hometown of Miami. The hotbed of criminal activity is the perfect hunting grounds for the budding killer of killers. Storylines will also touch on real-life serial killers in Miami within the same time period.
Fans will get to see Dexter graduate from college and join Miami Metro. Younger versions of familiar characters from the original show will be featured in the new series. Dexter’s family will be a key focal point. Harry will be back and shaping Dexter for his unique mission and a teenage Deb will no doubt prove to be a force to be reckoned with.
Don’t worry the prequel is not a replacement for Dexter: New Blood
The current revival series, “Dexter: New Blood,” will be staying put. “Dexter: New Blood” averaged over 8 million weekly viewers across platforms last year – making it Showtime’s most watched series. The network is developing the next chapter of “Dexter: New Blood,” to depict the emergence of Harrison (Dexter’s son). Now that Harrison has his own violent nature to contend with.
Dexter Origins isn’t the last prequel on the horizon.
Showtime is exploring ideas for other spin-offs based on the backstories of the more compelling characters littered throughout the Dexter universe. The Trinity Killer is a possibility that seems promising. Dr. Evelyn Vogel, the neuropsychiatrist met in season 8 would be really interesting to dive deeper into as well.
