Dogman sightings occur all over the United States. With such a wide expanse of thick forests, it’s no surprise Maine is home to these creatures as well.
Many ask, what’s the difference between a werewolf and a Dogman? How do you know which one you’ve seen? That all depends heavily on whether or not it’s a shapeshifter. If it always stays in a beast form, then it is a Dogman creature. If it transforms back into a person, it’s a werewolf.
Alleged werewolf and Dogman sightings both involve large, bipedal wolf-like creatures. They are usually described as muscular and hairy. There’s no way to know for certain just by looking – other than actually seeing it shape-shift.
Although most become convinced they saw a real werewolf, they’re most likely Dogman sightings.
A Dogman lurking near the Sandy River left two college students stunned.
One of the Dogman sightings in central Maine took place along the Sandy River. Two young women attending the University of Maine, left their dorm around 11 one night. They made their way through the field towards the trail to the river. It was a clear night.
One of the girls got the sense of being watched the second they hit the trail. She didn’t see anything, so naturally she thought it was just nerves and they kept going. They reached the river and found a grassy spot to settle into. Still the girl felt she and her friend were being watched. They sat there for about 10 minutes as her unease turned into dread.
Suddenly, there was a rustling sound about 50 feet to the left. Then a stillness that sent shivers up their spines.
Something huge with a canine-like structure and glowing yellow eyes shot out from the bushes behind them. Thankfully, it dashed across the field away from them. It disappeared into the woods on the opposite side of the clearing.
Naturally they got the hell out of there.
In addition to being far too large to be a regular dog or wolf, the beast was running on two legs. She could only describe what she saw as a werewolf.
Once in the safety and well lit dorms, they really weren’t sure how to process what happened. Certainly that couldn’t have been a real werewolf?
That massive size, those intense glowing eyes, and running on two legs? What else could it have been?
After learning of creatures such as the beast of bray road and reading of various dogman sightings, she realized she didn’t imagine what she saw. Others have seen these things. She now feels certain it was in fact a werewolf.
This woman shared her husband’s 3 Dogman sightings.
According to this poster, her husband saw a ridiculously large wolf, walking upright like a man. He just happened to look outside a window of their home when the beast was sauntering right by it.
He said it was all black, with ears and a snout like a wolf but it walked upright. Its eyes were yellow and almost cat-like in shape.
This thing would have been at least 7 feet tall to be seen from the shoulder religion up in that particular window. They measured outside of the house to verify and it’s 6-feet from the ground just to the window. its head and shoulders were above the window frame, in full view.
It was about two-weeks later when he saw the dogman again. This was when he got a full body view because it was farther from the window this time. It ran out from the pines and just darted across, back out of sight again. It clearly wasn’t a normal wolf but like most people he didn’t want to call it a werewolf or anything supernatural at this point.
Another week passed before he saw it again. This time it saw him as well. He said he was sitting at his computer desk and got that eerie feeling he was being watched. He thought maybe his wife was looking over his shoulder and turned around expecting her to be there. Instead a massive, black shadowy figure loomed over the room from the creature looking inside.
He actually thought he was having a stroke or something, still refusing to believe in the supernatural. He made his wife watch over him all night.
Dogman was spotted hanging out in an Oxford County Neighborhood
An anonymous poster shared a Dogman sighting that occurred in Oxford County Maine back in 2001. It was late at night when they happened to look out her window. At first, it looked like a (possibly naked) man was sitting on a roof. Then, the hair came into focus. Next, it turned its head to show a profile with pointed ears and a dog-like snout.
She wrote:
“They were almost like a German Shepherd’s ears. I could not understand what I was looking at. I just stared at him for a few minutes. I felt like if I moved, it would see me.“
It’s arms and legs were long, human-like, just extremely hairy. It sat on it’s butt, on the roof, just seemingly hanging out.
She slowly backed away and went to tell her husband. He didn’t believe her and stayed in bed. By the time she returned to the window the beast was gone.
She went on to write: “I don’t know or understand what I saw that night, but I did tell my husband and kids what I saw. It has haunted me for many years until I was just telling a few of my grandchildren, recently at camp. One of them got on the computer and found some pictures of what they thought I meant.”
Now she knows she’s not alone, others have seen similar dogman creatures over the years and have shared their encounter stories online.
“It was so scary! I was looking at the same thing I saw on the roof that night! I could not believe it. As I sit here looking at that picture I did not know it really existed many many years ago. Shared on Dogman Encounters
The ‘Palmyra Werewolf Story’ is one of the most famous Dogman encounters in Maine.
The Martin family lived in a cabin on quite a bit of land out in Palmyra, Maine. One evening they noticed a pulsating light in the trees at the edge of the property. Eric Martin and his son Sean headed down to the field, thinking it was probably poachers. Once they reached the woods, the lights disappeared. Eric got an uneasy feeling. Everything went silent and they didn’t find any tracks.
Memorial Day weekend, Eric got an eerie feeling again. He heard something strange in the distance and instinctively ushered his wife Shelley into the house. They turned to face a rustling noise and saw five sets of eyes staring at them.
They locked themselves inside the house. Unfortunately, the guns were stored in the barn. Eric decided to try to get them by using the car while the creatures were still at the tree-line.
Eric slowly walked toward the car. He set off motion sensor lights while he was out there. That’s when he realized how close they’d gotten. They seemed scared of the light though. They darted back into the darkness and Eric ran back to the house.
They called the police, but didn’t sense they were taken seriously – and no one came to help.
Eric decided to make a run for the guns again. This time, he’d purposely trip the motion lights since the creatures seemed afraid of it. Of course this plan lasted about two seconds. The first time the lights came on he realized all 5 of the Dogman creatures had been surrounding him. He barely made it to the house before the light clicked off.
Shelley woke her daughter Chelsea and they gathered up sharp objects to hunker down with. The family retreated to the master bedroom. They listened to the creatures outside, terrified, prisoners in their own home. They seemed only interested in terrorizing them. With a window between them, Shelley was sure they could get in if they wanted too.
But they didn’t come in. The werewolves, Dogmen… whatever they were, ran off by morning. Eric called his son Sean back over to look for tracks again. This time they found huge, clawed tracks that confirmed the creatures could walk on two legs.
Their story was re-enacted on Paranormal Witness on SyFy Channel. season 3 episode 9, “Wolf Pack”.
