Pet Sematary Bloodlines is based on Stephen King’s original 1983 novel and also serves as a prequel to the 2019 film. The plot centers around a young Jud Crandall (played by Jackson White) and his battle with this ancient evil. The character discussed some of his experience with the darkness beneath the Mi’kmaq burial site with Louis Creed in the first film. It’s not clear just how aligned this film will be with the book. Will Jud’s childhood dog be returning? Will the tale of Timmy Baterman’s post-war rise from the dead play out? Seems likely.
This film’s been in the works a few years but it’s surprising no one did it sooner.
Writer Jeff Buhler spoke of interest in a backstory while the 2019 version was still in theaters. “The ideas that we’ve been batting around recently have all been about digging into the mythology of the town.” He listed elements such as: The rituals the children present, Micmac mythology, and the Wendigo. The cemetery itself, possible origins, and of course Jud’s life.
Pet Sematary Bloodlines was green-lit in February of 2021 & principal photography began in August the same year.
